THE 78 CARDS · RESEARCH NOTES

Meaning & symbolism

Traditional Rider–Waite–Smith symbolism and an editorial Royal / Dragon adaptation for this card.

Upright keywords

Expansion · awaiting results · a long view

Upright meaning

After a decision has been made, the figure watches ships already moving across the water. The outcome is no longer entirely in their hands. This card speaks to trade, partnership, long-term planning, and knowing when further investment may be worthwhile.

Reversed keywords

Delays · narrow expectations · unrealistic projections

Reversed meaning

An investment or plan may not be producing the hoped-for return. Partners, timing, or expectations could need adjustment. The reversed card also reminds us that we cannot control everyone else's journey.

RWS image & symbols

Three planted wands provide a threefold foundation; the figure faces the sea, looking outward; ships carry work already set in motion; the elevated ground offers perspective.

Reader's lens

Do not assume that every ship will return with a profit. Consider the evidence and the person's actual involvement.

Royal / Dragon adaptation

Show a royal figure watching three ships. Make all three wands clear, and simplify the clothing and landscape.
