THE 78 CARDS · RESEARCH NOTES
Meaning & symbolism
Traditional Rider–Waite–Smith symbolism and an editorial Royal / Dragon adaptation for this card.
Upright keywords
Hope · renewal · authenticity · guidance
Upright meaning
After the Tower, the Star makes room for recovery without pretending that everything has healed. The figure pours water onto land and into a pool, nourishing both inner life and the living world. The card evokes honesty, reconnection with a wider perspective, and the patient restoration of foundations.
Reversed keywords
Loss of faith · emotional depletion · distance from a goal
Reversed meaning
Disappointment or perfectionism may obscure hope. Immediate needs may require care before distant ideals feel accessible. A reversal does not mean hope is gone; it may be difficult to reach.
RWS image & symbols
One large star and seven smaller ones provide a guiding pattern; two pitchers represent two streams of giving; one knee on land and one foot in water connect realms; a bird perched in the background signals returning life; the unshielded figure suggests openness.
Reader's lens
Distinguish hope from a promise. Ask what small action could nourish trust without pretending a wish is guaranteed.
Royal / Dragon adaptation
A princess or queen appears in nature; replace the perched bird with a small dragon. Preserve the eight stars and two pitchers.
