THE 78 CARDS · RESEARCH NOTES
Meaning & symbolism
Traditional Rider–Waite–Smith symbolism and an editorial Royal / Dragon adaptation for this card.
Upright keywords
Empathy · mature intuition · emotional containment
Upright meaning
The Queen contemplates an ornate, lidded cup from a throne beside the sea. She can stay with feeling without being overwhelmed by it: listening well, protecting an inner life, and sensing subtlety. Healthy empathy needs boundaries to avoid being absorbed by someone else's pain.
Reversed keywords
Emotional overload · idealization · weak boundaries
Reversed meaning
Someone may care for others at the expense of themselves, or shut down to avoid being swept away. Reversal calls for distinguishing intuition from assumptions about another person's feelings.
RWS image & symbols
The lidded cup with angelic ornament represents something private and precious; angel and sea-creature throne details suggest imagination; shore and sea keep feeling close; rock beneath the throne offers stability; the Queen looks inward toward the cup.
Reader's lens
Do not reduce the Queen to someone who must always sacrifice. What supports the caregiver's own emotional life?
Royal / Dragon adaptation
Place the Queen beside the sea with one lidded cup. Simplify any animal or sea-creature throne details into dragon motifs; add no real animals.
