THE 78 CARDS · RESEARCH NOTES
Meaning & symbolism
Traditional Rider–Waite–Smith symbolism and an editorial Royal / Dragon adaptation for this card.
Upright keywords
Fairness · choices · consequences · accountability
Upright meaning
Justice asks us to weigh evidence, causes, and consequences rather than merely hope for the outcome we prefer. Sword and scales appear together because judgment requires both consideration and action. The card can concern agreements, rules, personal accountability, or a truth that needs to be stated plainly.
Reversed keywords
Bias · avoiding accountability · unfair process
Reversed meaning
Someone may feel unjustly treated, rationalize their own actions, or rush to a verdict before the facts are clear. A reversal may reveal a system's limitations; it does not automatically prove that the querent is at fault. Separate verifiable facts from the pain of feeling wronged.
RWS image & symbols
The upright seated figure suggests clear responsibility; scales in the left hand weigh evidence; the raised sword in the right hand signifies decision; two pillars and a purple veil establish solemnity and boundaries; the crown represents authority.
Reader's lens
Tarot is no substitute for legal advice. In a dispute, ask what fairness would require for each party.
Royal / Dragon adaptation
A king or queen judges from a throne. Keep sword and scales in their respective hands and preserve symmetry; any added human figures must be royal.
