THE 78 CARDS · RESEARCH NOTES
Meaning & symbolism
Traditional Rider–Waite–Smith symbolism and an editorial Royal / Dragon adaptation for this card.
Upright keywords
Loss · regret · noticing what remains
Upright meaning
A dark-cloaked figure looks at three spilled cups while two still stand behind them. The card does not deny grief; it shows how attention can be pulled toward what has been lost. Recovery begins when sorrow has space, and when the person can gradually notice what still offers support.
Reversed keywords
Gradual acceptance · lingering regret · difficulty forgiving
Reversed meaning
Someone may be turning back toward what remains, or struggling to repair what cannot be changed. Respect the pace of grief; letting go is not a command to stop feeling.
RWS image & symbols
Three overturned cups represent loss; two upright cups represent what remains; a dark cloak conveys sorrow; the river marks a transition; a bridge and distant home suggest a possible way forward.
Reader's lens
Separate what cannot be recovered from what can still be cared for. Do not tell someone to cheer up immediately.
Royal / Dragon adaptation
Keep a solitary dark-clad royal, three spilled cups, two standing cups, and the bridge. No extra dragons or characters should dilute the solitude.
